The mountain town of Nikko 2 hours north by train from Tokyo celebrates the coming of spring with the Yayoi Festival. Yayoi is the name of the third month of the old lunar calendar which April on ours.
They pull decorative floats up to the Futarasan Shrine which enshrines the deities of the local mountains. At night they light up the lanterns that are on them. Inside musicians play drums and flutes.
The festival goes back over 1200 years.
